COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

Whether you will be attending a community college, technical school, or four year college, you are encouraged to apply early to at least two or three different schools. Most colleges prefer students to apply online. CFNC.org is an easy way to apply online to any of the NC colleges. The guidance office does have a few paper applications and most college websites allow students to download applications. Students should complete the application completely and neatly. If an essay is required, ask an English teacher to proof it for you. Your counselor will be glad to assist you in any way with your application. Colleges will not process your application unless it is complete with all documents including an official high school transcript.  Students will be asked to complete a transcript release form and bring it along with an stamped envelope addressed to the college, to Mrs. Hooks. An offical transcript will then be mailed to the college(s).

SAT & ACT

Students planning to go to a 4-year college or university right after graduating from high school will need an SAT or ACT test as part of their admissions application.  These students should consult with their counselor about which test they should take, when is the best time to take the test, and how often they should take the test.  Students can register for the test at the following websites:  collegeboard.com (for the SAT) and ACT.org (for the ACT).  These websites will list test dates, prices, test taking tips, and study materials. Students who are planning to enroll in a community college after graduating from high school do not need to take an SAT or ACT test and should also discuss this option with their counselor.

COLLEGE VISITATION is an important part of the selection process. It is a good idea to visit the college to speak with admissions representatives, departmental professors or chairpersons and other students. Also visit classroom buildings, dorms (if it is a four year college), student centers, cafeterias, recreation centers, and the community surrounding the college. Most colleges have scheduled open houses on designated dates throughout the year. This is the best time to receive a guided tour. If these dates are not convenient, call the college to schedule a tour.  Below is a list of  some of the colleges with their links or contact information.

These are some good examples of resources that are available.  If you do not see a college you are interested in either search the internet for "visiting"  the college you are interested in, or call the admissions office of that institution.
