Welcome to SJHS's AVID Program.  Please visit www.avidonline.org for more information.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  The AVID curriculum focuses on organizational skills, writing, critical thinking, inquiry, and collaboration.  We offer tutorials, field trips, guest speakers and career exposure to help students find the right college path and career.

The main goal of AVID is to prepare students for college.  Students are taught how to complete college applications and scholarships, as well as public speaking skills.  AVID students are placed in the college prep classes at SJHS and we offer tutorials and a support system to make sure they are successful.

Presently, we offer AVID for 9th graders year long.  10th graders will start AVID 2nd semester.  The goal is to offer the program to all grade levels by next year.  Students are chosen via a selection process that focuses on the AVID student profile.  To be in the program, students must maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA, make no lower than a 77 in any class, be a good role model, work hard in their classes, be individually determined and willing to take Honors or AP classes.

I have included an informational AVID Power Point at the bottom of this page.  Please contact me if you have any questions.
