Johnston County Schools - Literacy First Conference: Dallas, Texas
Parents and students often wonder how teachers spend their summers. Many are surprised to know that educators rarely put schoolwork aside even then.
July 11-12, 2012, Johnston County teachers and administrators from Benson Elementary, Cooper Elementary, Princeton Elementary, Selma Elementary, and West Smithfield Elementary attended the Literacy First Leadership Institute entitled "Achieving Beyond Expectations" in Dallas, Texas. Not only did the group learn brain researched strategies for vocabulary and comprehension instruction from the Keynote Speaker Dr. Douglas Fisher, author of In a Reading State of Mind, but they also benefited from other sessions which focused on the new Common Core standards and assessments and their relevance to the Literacy First process. It is anticipated that Johnston County students will achieve beyond expectations in the coming year as a result of these and other educators' dedication to a focus on teaching and learning.
