In 1998, Mr. Fred Smith donated 46 acres of land to Johnston County Schools to support the county in building two new schools.  Riverwood Elementary School opened its doors in 2000 for grades K-6.  Riverwood Middle School followed suit in 2001/2002 receiving 6th grade students from Riverwood Elementary as well as adding 7th and 8th grade students.  Initially, 614 students entered Riverwood Middle School with 37 teachers hired to lead instruction.  The school was led by Billy Mims as Principal and Tracey Peedin and Nancy Parker as Assistant Principals.  The student body president our first year was Quincey O'Neal.

School year 2005/2006 was a special one indeed as we changed leadership in welcoming Phil Lee as the Principal of Riverwood Middle School.  Jenny Moore continued as one of Mr. Lee's Assistant Principals and was joined by Marchelle Horner.  Mr. Lee joined our Raven family via Smithfield Selma High School.  Three more classroom teachers joined Riverwood as our student body increased to a record 912 students! Mark Parker served as Student Council President.
