Third grade is an exciting year for students in Reading. I love reading because you can trips to places and go on adventures you would have never gone on without even leaving the classroom! The following are just a few things that your child will be doing in Reading this year.
It is amazing to see students begin to better understand books that they have ready by using strategies such as Making Connections, Predicting, and Making Inferences. This year, your child will be expected to not only read the words on the page but to THINK about their reading in a way that most of them are not used to. There is a difference in being able to read the words on the page and to actually comprehend what is being read. Through the use of exciting literature, interactive read alouds, small group skill work, and LOTS of pairing and sharing - your child will leave third grade loving to read and THINK :) Students will be learning reading strategies such as making predictions, making connections, monitoring and clarifying, drawing conclusions, author's purpose, etc. Always remember that you can help your child think as they read by simply asking them the 5 W's as you read with them each night (who, what, when, where, why). Reading is Thinking and I cannot wait to see what your child's brain will think up next!
